Hikers Find a Dog Who Can Barely Stand and Climb the Mountain Again to Save Him

After about five hours of hiking, Maxime and Issy reached the top of Bobotov Kuk in Montenegro. Near the summit, they spotted a thin dog lying on his side, an old bandage wrapped around one leg. He was too weak to stand.

When they knelt beside him with water and a can of tuna, his tail began to wag. La Repubblica reported on the couple’s first encounter with Bobo.

Maxime tried to fit him into his backpack so he could carry him down. But the dog was too big, and the trail below them was steep. With daylight fading, the couple headed down to find help.

While Issy gathered supplies, Maxime returned to the summit with Blažo, a member of a local mountain rescue group.

The dog was still there.

On the steepest stretches, Maxime and Blažo laid him in a blanket, gathered up the corners and took turns carrying him over their shoulders. Somewhere along the way, Maxime gave him a name. He called him Bobo, after the mountain where they’d found him. Los Andes covered the hourslong descent.

Once Bobo was safely down, he received veterinary care. At a later visit, the couple learned what had caused the injury beneath the bandage. Bobo had been shot, and his leg eventually had to be amputated.

Within days of surgery, the dog who’d barely been able to stand was already running and jumping on three legs.

While Maxime and Blažo were getting Bobo down the mountain, Issy rescued a stray kitten. The couple named him Voli, and soon there were two new passengers in their camper van.

Maxime and Issy often find them curled up together on the couch. Sometimes Voli even gives Bobo a wash. On hikes, Bobo likes to go out in front, stopping farther up the trail to wait for the people who once carried him down.

Share Bobo’s story to give Maxime, Issy, Blažo and the veterinary team the recognition they deserve for bringing him safely down the mountain and giving him a second chance.
