They Threw Him Away. 150 Days Later, This Dog Proved the World Wrong
When the rescuers first saw the photos, they froze.
The dog lying in the street barely looked alive. His body was so thin it seemed to fade into the pavement beneath him. One eye was badly damaged. His face was marked with open wounds. He was not resting. He was shutting down.
That reaction came from the rescue team at Rescates Un Millón Como Tú. What they were looking at was not a sudden collapse. This dog, later named Chiquihuite, had already spent two weeks trying to survive after being abandoned.
Here is why that detail matters.
When sick dogs are left without care, their condition often worsens fast. Dehydration, infection, and exhaustion can compound within days, especially when there is no shelter, food, or medical help. Once the body reaches that stage, recovery becomes harder with every passing hour.
Chiquihuite’s story would become a clear example of that reality, and of what can happen when someone finally decides not to look away.
Thrown Out for Being Weak

A local resident told the rescuers that Chiquihuite’s owner had chased him out of the house simply because he was sick and weak.
No warning. No help.
Terrified and confused, Chiquihuite ran through the streets looking for safety. At one point, he bolted into the road, trying to escape whatever had already taught him that staying near humans was dangerous.
People saw him. No one stopped.
By the time the rescue team reached him, his body had nothing left to give. He could no longer stand. He closed his eyes and endured the pain in silence.
This kind of collapse is common in severely dehydrated dogs. According to AAHA, “If your finger sticks to the gums because they are dry or tacky, then he is dehydrated and you should seek veterinary care immediately.” When dehydration reaches this stage, organs can begin to struggle, even if the dog is later rescued.
The rescuers knew they were running out of time.
“They Told Us They Couldn’t Save Him”

Chiquihuite was rushed to the nearest local vet. It was not a full clinic, just a small veterinary pharmacy. It was the only option nearby.
What they heard there stopped them cold.
“They told us they couldn’t save him.”
Euthanasia was suggested.
For a moment, it felt final. Then something shifted. The rescuer looking down at the fragile dog could not accept that this was how his life would end.
She begged for fluids. She begged for time. She asked for help transferring him to a larger veterinary hospital that same day.
That decision bought him a chance.
Emergency stabilization does not mean recovery. It means buying time. Fluids, warmth, and monitoring can keep the body functioning long enough for proper treatment to begin.
A Body That Told a Story of Neglect

Once Chiquihuite was stable, the full extent of his condition became clear.
His nose and face were covered in wounds. One eye was badly injured. The rescuers did not know if the damage came from abuse, street fights, or untreated illness. What they did know was that this level of deterioration does not happen overnight.
According to WSAVA, the lowest body condition score in dogs is described as: “Ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones and all bony prominences evident from a distance. No discernible body fat. Obvious loss of muscle mass.” Dogs in this state are often fighting both starvation and muscle breakdown at the same time.
Yet his behavior surprised everyone.
He showed no aggression. No fear. He remained gentle and trusting through every exam and treatment. By the first week, the rescuers were convinced he had once been someone’s beloved pet.
The First Days Were Painfully Slow

They named him Chiquihuite and focused on one goal: keep him alive.
Food was offered carefully. He wanted to eat, but his body could only manage a few pieces at a time. Every day, his wounds were cleaned. His injured eye required constant care.
Eye injuries like his are serious. According to PetMD, “Eye ulcers lead to pain, redness of the eye, eye discharge, blinking frequently or holding the eye closed, and sometimes swelling.” Without treatment, lasting damage can occur quickly.
The rescuers watched him closely. They adjusted care day by day. There were no shortcuts.
Day 14 Felt Different

By the second week, something subtle changed.
For the first time, Chiquihuite lay in the sunlight. He still could not stand, but his strength was returning in small ways. His appetite improved. His awareness sharpened. The rescuers could feel his will to live growing.
Next steps came slowly.
Day 20 Changed Everything

On Day 20, the moment they had been waiting for arrived.
Chiquihuite stood up.
The steps were small. They were unsteady. They were everything.
Since the day of his rescue, he had gained one kilogram. It was proof that his body was finally absorbing nourishment instead of just surviving.
Weeks of fear gave way to quiet relief.
From Endurance to Joy
By Day 60, Chiquihuite was no longer just holding on.
He moved freely. He began to play with other dogs. The pain that once shaped his days started to loosen its grip.
The dog who had closed his eyes in surrender was learning how to live again.
The Truth Revealed at Day 150

At first, the rescuers believed Chiquihuite was seven or eight years old. His body looked worn by hardship.
Then the truth came out.
He was only about three.
He had not aged naturally. He had been broken early.
A Life That Finally Belongs to Him
Today, Chiquihuite lives surrounded by care, safety, and warmth. He is no longer fighting to survive. He is learning what it means to feel secure without fear.
His happiness did not arrive overnight. It was built through patience, medical care, and one decision to step in when it mattered most.
If Chiquihuite’s story stayed with you, consider sharing it so more people understand what neglect looks like, and how much can change when someone chooses to stop and help.

Thank you for saving this amazing pup! He is were he belongs now!
He deserved all the chances to live a “normal ” life, and was blessed by those that cared enough to see he had all the proper care. As for the previous owner, he should be locked up key thrown way and let him / her feel what their dog endured.
God will bless you for saving this precious baby, he’s a little angel send to you by God himself 💖
