Shelter Staff Celebrate Empty Dog Kennels For The First Time In 47 Years
An empty kennel is something animal shelter workers hope to see. A whole row of them is a reason to celebrate.
Just before Christmas in December 2023, the team at Adams County SPCA in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, had an extraordinary announcement. Every dog in their care had found a home.
Only two weeks earlier, the kennels had been almost full. Now, the people who had cared for those dogs could celebrate knowing their former residents would spend the holidays with families.
A Community Gives Shelter Animals A New Beginning
The shelter shared the news on Dec. 22, crediting a community that had stepped forward when the animals needed them.
“Our community stepped up once again!” staff wrote on Facebook.
For an organization with a 47-year history, the milestone was something special. Staff described it as “a true miracle!”
But behind the celebration was the everyday work of caring for animals and finding people ready to welcome them. The shelter specifically praised its staff and volunteers for helping its residents find suitable homes.
Getting an animal adopted matters. Helping that animal find a family prepared to care for them is what gives that new beginning a chance to last.
Dozens Of Animals Went Home Before Christmas
The weeks leading up to the holiday brought a remarkable wave of adoptions.
According to reporting by FOX 17, 90 dogs and cats found homes during that period, along with two ferrets.
Each adoption changed the shelter a little. Another animal left with a family, and another space opened up.
Eventually, there were no dogs left waiting.
For the people who had fed them, cleaned their kennels and helped them through their stay, those vacant spaces offered something worth pausing to appreciate. The animals they had worked so hard for were beginning the next part of their lives.
One New Arrival Still Needed A Safe Place
Even amid the excitement, the shelter’s work continued.
In its announcement, Adams County SPCA explained that one stray cat had arrived shortly beforehand. Every dog had gone home, but this newcomer still needed somewhere safe to stay.
That small detail makes the moment feel all the more meaningful. The shelter could celebrate an extraordinary achievement while continuing to welcome an animal who needed help.
By the time of its announcement, the organization reported 598 adoptions during 2023. It had also reunited 125 stray animals with their owners.
Empty Kennels Meant Room To Help Again
The team already had plans for the newly available space.
Adams County SPCA said it would begin taking animals from other Pennsylvania shelters the following week, helping facilities under pressure.
The community’s kindness could reach beyond the animals it had already adopted. With room available again, another dog or cat could get an opportunity to find a family.
For now, though, the staff allowed themselves a moment to enjoy what had happened.
After weeks of hard work, they had something wonderful to celebrate before Christmas. Every dog they had been trying to place was finally home.
And when the next dog needed them, a kennel would be ready.
