She Was Thrown Away Like Trash at a Garbage Dump. What Happened Next Gave Her a Family, a Child, and a Name.

When rescuers first saw her, they could hardly believe she was still alive.

An elderly French Bulldog lay abandoned in a garbage dump in Rizal, discarded as if she no longer had any place in the world. Most of her fur was gone.

Open wounds covered her body, many of them alive with maggots. Her nails had grown so long they curled painfully, a silent record of months, perhaps years, without care.

She did not cry. She did not try to move.

She simply lay there, waiting.

This dog would later be known as Frenchy. Her rescue was documented by Pawssion Project Foundation, shared through a video uploaded on the Dogs are Family YouTube channel.

What began in a place meant for waste became a test of how much care one broken body could still receive, and how far compassion could reach once someone chose to stop.

Found Where No Living Being Should Be

Frenchy was discovered by Patricia, a woman who stumbled upon her at the dump and understood immediately that the dog would not survive much longer without help. Horrified by what she saw, Patricia reached out to Pawssion Project Foundation in desperation.

The rescue team did not hesitate.

They urged her to bring Frenchy to the nearest veterinary clinic, anywhere that could provide emergency care. There was no time to search for the perfect option. Minutes mattered more than plans.

At the first clinic, veterinarians did everything they could. They cleaned her wounds, began debridement, ran blood tests, and placed her on IV fluids. Still, it became clear that her condition was far more severe than the clinic could manage.

Frenchy was rushed to a hospital equipped for intensive treatment.

What Neglect Had Done to Her Body

At Marikina Hospital, the veterinary team worked with careful precision. Clusters of maggots embedded deep in Frenchy’s back were gently removed. Her wounds were cleaned again and again.

She barely moved through it all.

Yet something about her quiet stillness stood out.

One rescuer said it softly while watching her endure another round of treatment.
“Frenchy really has so much will to live!”

That strength mattered. Removing maggots from wounds requires thorough cleaning and the removal of dead tissue, a process known as debridement.

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, “Maggots will be removed by thoroughly cleaning and flushing any wounds, and removing any dead tissue (debridement).” Frenchy endured this process repeatedly, her body weak but steady.

Frenchy had almost certainly been used for breeding. Once she became sick or could no longer produce puppies, she was discarded.

Fighting Back, One Meal at a Time

Frenchy remained under close monitoring. Her wounds were cleaned twice daily. Each session revealed more hidden maggots, reminders of how deeply the neglect had taken hold.

And yet, something unexpected kept surprising the team.

Her appetite.

She ate eagerly. Each meal felt like a decision to stay.

After several days, her condition stabilized enough for her to leave the hospital and continue treatment under foster care. The work was far from over, but the danger had eased.

Healing That Continued Long After the Hospital

Once home with the rescuers, the routine was relentless. Wound cleaning. Medications. Follow-up appointments. Days shaped around care.

It was exhausting. It was emotional.

And still, love made room.

Veterinary wound care often continues well beyond the hospital. The MSD Veterinary Manual explains that after wound preparation and hair removal, “surgical debridement (removal of nonviable tissue and foreign debris) can be performed.” Frenchy’s healing required patience, consistency, and hands willing to return to the same task day after day.

Slowly, her personality began to surface.

After using the bathroom, Frenchy would hurry to a corner, turn her back, and hide her face as if embarrassed. When reassured, she would come out again, wandering off to finish leftovers from the other dogs.

The First Smile That Changed Everything

Nothing compares to a rescue dog’s first real smile.

When Frenchy was strong enough to attend an event, she stepped out like it was her debut. She walked through a mall, growing confident enough to run, hop, and simply exist as a dog again. People stopped to greet her. She soaked in the attention.

She even discovered a favorite comfort.

Air conditioning.

She would play for a bit, then hurry back to her cool spot, savoring comforts she had never known before.

One month after her rescue, the transformation was undeniable. Her wounds had healed significantly. Her spirit had returned. She had touched countless hearts along the way.

From Foster Goodbye to Forever Home

While still fostering Frenchy, Pawssion Project Foundation searched carefully for the right adopter. Someone prepared for ongoing medication, spay, and lifelong care.

They found them.

Saying goodbye was bittersweet, as it always is in rescue.

On her last night with the rescue team, Frenchy was more clingy than ever, as if she sensed the change coming.

Then came adoption day.

Frenchy was renamed Mami.

A Daughter, a Sister, and a Life She Deserved

Mami’s new family welcomed her not as a rescue, but as a daughter. She gained a little human sister who hugs her every morning, naps with her on the couch, and whispers secrets meant only for them.

She gained four-legged siblings who taught her how to play, chase toys, and trust again.

At first, she was shy. Unsure if she was truly safe.

Then her tail began to wag freely. Her face opened with joy.

Now Mami wakes up to sunlight instead of fear. To laughter instead of silence. To a home filled with gentle hands, soft beds, and belonging.
